INGREDIENTS:

  1. Fish (any oily fish) - 1/2 kilogram
  2. Onion - 2
  3. Shallot (sambar onion) - 10
  4. Ginger - 2 tablespoon (tbsp.)
  5. Garlic - 2 tablespoon (tbsp.)
  6. Green chili - 2
  7. Turmeric powder - 1/2 teaspoon (tsp.)
  8. Chili powder - 1 1/2 tablespoon (tbsp.)
  9. Black pepper powder - 1/2 tablespoon (tbsp.)
  10. Kudam puli (pot tamarind) - 3
  11. Salt - as needed

PREPARATION:

  1. Soak kudam puli (pot tamarind) in water for 10 minutes.
  2. Slice ginger, garlic, green chili vertically.
  3. In a pan heat oil. now add mustard seeds, fenugreek seeds once the mustard seeds stop splattering add ginger, garlic, green chili and sauté for 2 minutes.
  4. Now add onion, shallot (sambar onion) and sauté until they turn translucent (golden brown).
  5. Now add turmeric powder, chili powder, black pepper powder, salt and sauté until the raw smell is gone.
  6. Now add the soaked kudam puli (pot tamarind) along with the juice. add water as needed and bring to boil.
  7. Once the raw smell of kudam puli (pot tamarind) is gone add the fish. Simmer and cook for 15 minutes or until the right thinness is reached and fish is cooked.
  8. Garnish with curry leaves and then serve.

NOTES:

  1. Substitute regular tamarind if you don't have kudam puli (pot tamarind)
