INGREDIENTS:

  1. Rice - 1 cup
  2. Pattani paruppu (split pea) - 1/4 cup
  3. Chopped onion - 1/2 cup
  4. Cumin seed - 1 teaspoon (tsp.)
  5. Cinnamon stick - 1/2 inch
  6. Clove - 2
  7. Crushed Cardamom - 1
  8. Black pepper - 12
  9. Oil - 1 laddle
  10. Salt - as needed

PREPARATION:

  1. Soak rice and split pea each separately in water over night or 4 to 5 hours. Drain all the liquid and keep it aside.
  2. In a pan heat oil and sauté the onion until they become translucent (golden brown).
  3. Now add cumin seeds, cloves, cinnamon stick, cardamom, black pepper, little water and sauté them.
  4. Now add the soaked spit pea, 2 1/4 cup of water and bring to boil. Simmer and cook for 10 minutes.
  5. Now add soaked rice and cook 20 to 25 minutes or until the rice is cooked and then serve.

NOTES:

  1. Adjust water if needed, for best result ratio to rice to water should be 1:2.
