  1. Pearl tapioca (javvarisi) - 1 cup
  2. Spit green gram (moong bean) - 1/4 cup
  3. Dry chili - 4
  4. Mustard seed - 1 teaspoon (tsp.)
  5. Curry leaf - 8 count
  6. Split black gram - 1 teaspoon (tsp.)
  7. Split Bengal gram - 1 teaspoon (tsp.)
  8. Fresh shredded coconut - 1/4 cup
  9. Asafoetida powder - a pinch
  10. Rock salt - 1 teaspoon (tsp.)
  11. Oil - 2 tablespoon (tbsp.)


  1. Soak pearl tapioca (javvarisi) in water for at least 3 hours. Drain the water from pearl tapioca (javvarisi) and keep it aside.
  2. Soak split green gram (moong bean) in water for at least 1/2 hour. Drain water and keep the split green gram (moong bean) aside.
  3. In a pan heat oil. Now add mustard seeds, split black gram, split Bengal gram, dry chili and sauté.
  4. Now add curry leaves, soaked pearl tapioca (javvarisi), soaked split green gram (moong bean) and mixed well. Now sprinkle asafoetida powder and mix well.
  5. Now place a cover, stir and cook. After 5 min add the shredded coconut and stir well make sure you don't burn.
  6. Now reduce heat, simmer and cook until pearl tapioca (javvarisi) is cooked and upma consistency is reached and serve.
