  1. Flattened rice - 200 grams
  2. -- For thuvaiyal --
    1. Coconut - 1/2
    2. Green chili - 2
    3. Garlic - 3 cloves
    4. Tamarind - small lemon size
    5. Curry leaf - 10
    6. Salt - to taste
  3. -- For Tempering --
    1. Oil - 2 tablespoon (tbsp.)
    2. Mustard seed - 1 teaspoon (tsp.)
    3. Vadagam (Tamil sun dried crispies) - 3 **
    4. Curry leaf - 5
    5. Dry chili - 2


  1. Soak flattened rice for 15 minutes. Drain and keep it aside.
  2. Grind all the ingredients under "For thuvaiyal" (coconut, garlic...) section into a fine paste by adding little water as possible.
  3. Add the ground paste (thuvaiyal)  to the soaked flattened rice, mix well and keep it aside for 15 minutes so the flatten rice soak with the thuvaiyal.
  4. In a pan heat oil add the mustard seeds, 2 broken dry chili, curry leaves. Once the mustard seed stop splattering add the flattened rice.
  5. Sauté and cook until the rice got hot (turns kind of golden brown) and serve.


  1. ** If you don't have vadagam, you can use one finely chopped onion.
