  1. Kuthiraivali (barnyard millet) - 3/4 tumbler
  2. Raw rice - 1/4 tumbler
  3. Javvarisi (tapioca sago) - 1 teaspoon (tsp.)
  4. Shredded Coconut - little
  5. Cooked rice - 1 teaspoon (tsp.)
  6. Dosai batter - 2 ladle
  7. Sugar - 1 teaspoon (tsp.)
  8. Baking soda - as needed
  9. Salt - as needed


  1. Soak Kuthiraivali (barnyard millet), raw rice, Javvarisi (tapioca sago) in water submerged for at least 5 hours or until they are soaked. Drain water and keep it aside.
  2. Now grind soaked ingredients (Kuthiraivali (barnyard millet), raw rice, Javvarisi (tapioca sago), coconut, cooked rice into a fine thick batter by adding water as needed. Add this the dosai batter, salt as needed and beat well. Now let it ferment for at least 8 hours. once fermented add sugar, baking soda and beat well.
  3. Now make appam with the batter and serve.

  7. Heat appam pan or appachatti over medium flame and pour a ladle full of batter into the pan.
  8. Immediately twirl the pan to spread the batter in a circle motion. further cover and simmer for about 2 minutes or until the edges turn golden brown and gets cooked completely.
  9. Finally, carefully remove the appam from the pan and serve.


  1. Goes well with coconut milk.
